Seed Phrase Beginner

A seed phrase is a sequence of words, typically 12 or 24, generated by a crypto wallet that can restore access to every account and fund that wallet controls.

When a self-custody wallet is first set up, it generates a seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic phrase, from a large, randomly generated number. That phrase mathematically encodes the private keys behind every account the wallet manages. If the original device is lost, damaged or replaced, entering the same seed phrase into compatible wallet software restores access to the same accounts and funds exactly as they were, which is why it is sometimes described as a master key to the wallet.

Because a seed phrase grants complete control over the funds it protects, anyone who obtains it, whether by theft, a scam, or an accidental leak, can move those funds, and there is no password reset or customer support line able to help once that happens. This is a direct consequence of self-custody: the user, not a company, is fully responsible for keeping the phrase safe.

Common guidance is to write the phrase down on paper or another durable physical backup, store it offline in a secure location, and never type it into a website, an app, or share it with anyone. Any request for a seed phrase, including one from someone claiming to be customer support, should be treated as an attempted scam. Storing it digitally, such as in a photo, cloud note or password manager, is generally discouraged because those systems can potentially be compromised remotely.

Key takeaways

  • A seed phrase of 12 or 24 words can fully restore a wallet's accounts and funds if a device is lost or replaced.
  • Anyone who obtains your seed phrase has complete control over the funds it protects, with no way to reverse a theft.
  • It should be stored offline, never typed into a website or app, and never shared with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.

Seed Phrase — frequently asked questions

What happens if I lose my seed phrase?

If access to the wallet app or device is also lost, the funds are typically unrecoverable, since there is no central authority able to reissue a seed phrase. This is why a secure offline backup matters from the moment a wallet is created.

Is it safe to store a seed phrase in a password manager or cloud note?

Most security guidance advises against it, since an online account, cloud service or password manager can potentially be compromised remotely. A physical, offline backup kept in a secure location away from the original device is the more commonly recommended approach for most users.
